This month we have been discussing designing with bold color, in honor of Benjamin Moore’s color of the year choice, Caliente, and because we have recently finalized and photographed a project that is different from those we are typically asked to design. We were hired by this young, modern family, to design their beautiful home in Ashburn, VA. Their challenges with the space included a typical issue we’ve seen lately, how to make two story spaces feel finished and warm, as well as creating a more modern feel in a more neo-traditional home design. They had already begun to furnishing their living room and dining rooms spaces and wanted our assistance with their overwhelming family room as well as giving function to their under-used sunroom.

We started by addressing the hum-drum, builder-grade fireplace. We added a bold, modern wavy tile from Porcelanosa and designed a new modern, sleek wooden mantel. They also had a strange opening next to their fireplace that was calling for a custom built-in bookcase. We took the opportunity to create some drama and add some geometric custom built-in shelves. We accessorized them with bold, colorful, modern accessories. These clients love color. To add colorful drama we painted the wall to the left of the new fireplace tile a bold red color. It nicely pops against the bright white walls and fireplace tile, adding warmth and interest without overwhelming the large space. We kept the furniture and draperies a neutral grey and added pops of red and gold with the accent pillows. Custom-made two-story draperies in a shimmery silver color with black accents add drama and warm the space, again, without overwhelming it. The new layout provides comfortable seating for entertaining and TV watching. Bold, modern, abstract art ties the bold colors together, minimally completing the design.

In the sunroom, we added a comfortable sectional to create a very warm, inviting seating area for entertaining or lounging. A bright bold accent chair completes the seating plan and bold art and accessories create impact. In one corner we hung a collection of masks that the clients have begun to collect while traveling overseas. Custom window treatments add softness and warmth to the space. We also found some modern pots for the client add houseplants into this bright, bold space. The overall space is so warm and inviting and uniquely fit the client’s own bold personality!

The client’s sweet daughter was fascinated with our photographer’s equipment, so she decided to capture her as well.
